Welcome to Quarry Hill's Blog!

Quarry Hill Creative Center in Rochester, VT, founded 1946 by Barbara and Irving Fiske, is Vermont's oldest alternative community and at one time was probably also its largest. In the 60s -80s, as many as 90 people lived here.
It was and is visited each year, often in summer (but in every season, really) by visitors from all over the world.
We welcome interesting and creative people who are peaceful, bring no weapons, don't believe in hitting children or killing animals, and enjoy the beauty of Vermont and of themselves.

Most of us do not adhere to any particular dogma or religion, though many do find Eastern philosophy closest to our own thought (some of us are also members of the Quakers/Society of Friends).
We value the individual, particularly people who are energetic and have a sense of humor.
Visitors are welcome-- and prospective residents, too. There are some places for rent, others for sale. If interested, get in touch!
And, please follow the Blog and comment whenever you like!

"The symbol is the enemy of the reality, and the reality is ever one's true guide, true friend, true companion, and true self." Irving Fiske, 1908-1990

Join us for a FESTIVAL of the ARTS next year at Quarry Hill, VT's oldest alternative art colony and writer's retreat!

http://www.gofundme.com/bxnwso

My friend Pim FK, a Dutch artist, and I have been planning a project featuring the artistic/ literary side of Quarry Hill Creative Center next year (2015),

We plan to ask several writers and artists (and musicians also if you like, video artists, etc.) to come to Quarry Hill next summer, and together create Pim's idea-- a work of collaborative art!  Writers will write brief stories and poems (some true, some imaginary) and will post them on the wall. Artists will choose one (or more than one) to create a work of art to illustrate the tale or image.

Video artists and musicians could make films and theme music to go with the story.
We are still just developing the idea, and welcome your thoughts and ideas to help us make Quarry Hill again a fully flowering creative place where, as Irving said, Time and Eternity intersect.

Check out our crowdfunding site and see what you think!  We can also adjust the site according to people's ideas!  http://www.gofundme.com/bxnwso

HAPPY TIME AT THE ALL NIGHT DANCE COSTUME PARTY IN 2008

A NOTE FROM JAIME & JANELLE. ladybelle, i first went to quarry hill back in 2008 with my then-boyfriend (and best friend to this day!), MARTIN. he is a good friend of airon's, and so one hot august morning, we all took off from dumbo, destined for the promise land. i couldn't have dreamed up what i was about to live.... martin & i set up our tent of love on trevor's front lawn, and it rained for days and days it seemed, and unfortunately we didn't get to float down the river during the days, but hanging out in trev's living room and meeting all the good flowers was exactly where we were supposed to be, the rain growing beautiful everlasting friendships, quenching the hill's thirst for life, the hummingbirds spreading joy outside the window. there we all were, united by this place of magic, where the spirits still roam and the stars shine brighter, the FAMILY, the feeling of the revolution still present in every blade of grass, every petal, every leaf, every sweet pea pod. it forever changed my life, those days i spent on that hill, tucked away in nature, cleansing with the rain, dressed in a tie dyed tutu, feathers in my hair, love in my heart as vast as vermont. my twin sister- jaime, was back in canada at the time, which rarely happens- us being apart from each other. and so, she has heard my stories about the magic land, the people, the principles, the vegan pancakes for breakfast, and we have longed to be there ever since 2008! this is the year we will come, to the party, to celebrate life & truth & music & art & the highest purpose of living. i look so forward to seeing you all there, and i want you to know that almost daily i think about the beautiful existence of Quarry Hill. I am so grateful, and to your FATHER, Irving, bless him for creating himself and all of this. His vision and his life was such a gift to the universe, and i believe it continues to create a whole new world. THANK YOU. sending love to QH, always. love from canada, janelle (&jaime)

All Night Dance Party in July...

I hope to see many of our friends at the All Night Costume Dance Party this summer. It will be fun and I'm sure many things that are unexpected will happen... Like the night when the jazz musicians from Waitsfield showed up at three in the morning. That was a good night. This is our 65th anniversary here at QH, so I hope people will think of things to do to celebrate this fact and to have a different sort of all night party, maybe some new stuff in it. I look forward to seeing you all. Safety and fun can co-exist! I'm typing with borrowed glasses while waiting for my own to show up (being fixed) so don't be surprised if there's a typo or 2.

Robin Fiske's 60th Birthday

Today was my cousin Robin's 60th birthday.  He's 9 months or so younger than me, having been born on 3. 26. 1951 in Tucson, Arizona, where my mother was born, and where at that time my grandmother, Isabelle Daniel Jones Hall, was very ill with cancer. I guess that his father, Milton, and his mother, Theckla, must have been there to help Barb and Irving take care of her, and there Robin was born.
He still seems very young! Robin skiis a lot, lets his friends borrow his car way more than I would even, and is cheerful a lot of the time. He also knows how to help take care of Barb in ways that I would find hard...
She enjoyed his birthday party despite pain in her arm from the removal of her melanoma tumor (we hope that's all there is) and loved seeing people. Thanks to everyone who came, or who in any way acknowledged Robin's birthday.
