Lists numerous ways to help Vermont after the hurricane and floods. Things are tough here, and they are still getting more difficult. People are finding out that insurance won't cover their lost homes, and though FEMA seems to be trying to be helpful, one must use up other sources of aid first. However, it is wonderful that so many people have tried to help-- especially in Rochester, Bethel, Granville, Hancock, Pittsfield, Royalton, and other Central Vermont towns that were some of the hardest hit by Irene's fury. Rochester is in a narrow valley and has often seemed to me to be like a kind of wind tunnel-- the wildest weather passes through here. We also have some of the greatest beauty in Vermont to balance the wild cold weather of winter and the ups and downs of the winds and rains... and when the weather is good, even when it is not perfect-- in this moment, the near peak of Autumn... it is still, with all the difficulty and suffering and loss, a kind of earthly heaven.
