Welcome to Quarry Hill's Blog!

Quarry Hill Creative Center in Rochester, VT, founded 1946 by Barbara and Irving Fiske, is Vermont's oldest alternative community and at one time was probably also its largest. In the 60s -80s, as many as 90 people lived here.
It was and is visited each year, often in summer (but in every season, really) by visitors from all over the world.
We welcome interesting and creative people who are peaceful, bring no weapons, don't believe in hitting children or killing animals, and enjoy the beauty of Vermont and of themselves.

Most of us do not adhere to any particular dogma or religion, though many do find Eastern philosophy closest to our own thought (some of us are also members of the Quakers/Society of Friends).
We value the individual, particularly people who are energetic and have a sense of humor.
Visitors are welcome-- and prospective residents, too. There are some places for rent, others for sale. If interested, get in touch!
And, please follow the Blog and comment whenever you like!

"The symbol is the enemy of the reality, and the reality is ever one's true guide, true friend, true companion, and true self." Irving Fiske, 1908-1990

Make Peace Flags in Middlebury for the Dalai Lama's visit...

Tibetan Peace Flag-Making

Middlebury College Library Lobby, Oct. 1-14

Students and the whole Middlebury community are invited to the Davis Family Library to make Tibetan Peace Flags that will decorate the building for the visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. This is a chance to share your message of peace, thanksgiving and good will with the Dalai Lama and our whole community.  Come and write your wishes, thoughts and prayers, or express your feelings by drawing or decorating your flag. Tables with flag-making supplies will be set up in the library lobby from Oct. 1-14. Flags will be on display in the library throughout October.

How to Help Vermont: from Seven Days (Burlington Newspaper)

http://7d.blogs.com/blurt/2011/08/after-irene-how-you-can-help-vermont.html Lists numerous ways to help Vermont after the hurricane and floods. Things are tough here, and they are still getting more difficult. People are finding out that insurance won't cover their lost homes, and though FEMA seems to be trying to be helpful, one must use up other sources of aid first. However, it is wonderful that so many people have tried to help-- especially in Rochester, Bethel, Granville, Hancock, Pittsfield, Royalton, and other Central Vermont towns that were some of the hardest hit by Irene's fury. Rochester is in a narrow valley and has often seemed to me to be like a kind of wind tunnel-- the wildest weather passes through here. We also have some of the greatest beauty in Vermont to balance the wild cold weather of winter and the ups and downs of the winds and rains... and when the weather is good, even when it is not perfect-- in this moment, the near peak of Autumn... it is still, with all the difficulty and suffering and loss, a kind of earthly heaven. Visit Vermont... help out... be volunteers... send money to either of two funds to help the Rochester area: 1. Relief For Rochester Vermont c/o Town of Rochester P.O. Box 238 Rochester, VT, 05767 Please write checks to “Relief For Rochester Vermont” A fund established by the Federated Church of Rochester, Vermont, which is a tax exempt organization. or 2. Rebuild Rochester Vermont Foundation, Inc. 122 South Main Street Rochester VT 05767 Please write checks to “Rebuild Rochester Vermont Foundation, Inc.” A fund established by friends and neighbors of Rochester. IRS section 501(c)(3) status is pending Thanks from Rochester, and thanks from the Quarry Hill Community area of Rochester. -- Ladybelle

March 8th: The Biggest Snowstorm

Yesterday Vermont endured one of the deepest and heaviest snowfalls on record. Cars were buried (I dug one of them out myself, with my son, Andrew, and cousin, Robin; not too easy on my  back today). It reminded many of the deep snowfalls of the Sixties and Seventies -- the way we think "winters really should be, or winters used to be," according to NPR this morning.
But the skiing should be incredible at all the ski areas in Vermont, so if you're a skiing type of person (I only do cross country, and that not for a long time) come and enjoy the fruit of our cold climate, or what Calvin Coolidge called "our invigorating climate."

It is beautiful-- and deep-- out there.

Visit Quarry Hill this year!

We've got great nearby skiing... we're in between Sugarbush and Killington, VT.  If you prefer to come in summer, we have beautiful views, woods to walk in, and a running brook.
We hope you will visit this year, possibly rent a room or a house, and stay as long as you wish!
