Welcome to Quarry Hill's Blog!

Quarry Hill Creative Center in Rochester, VT, founded 1946 by Barbara and Irving Fiske, is Vermont's oldest alternative community and at one time was probably also its largest. In the 60s -80s, as many as 90 people lived here.
It was and is visited each year, often in summer (but in every season, really) by visitors from all over the world.
We welcome interesting and creative people who are peaceful, bring no weapons, don't believe in hitting children or killing animals, and enjoy the beauty of Vermont and of themselves.

Most of us do not adhere to any particular dogma or religion, though many do find Eastern philosophy closest to our own thought (some of us are also members of the Quakers/Society of Friends).
We value the individual, particularly people who are energetic and have a sense of humor.
Visitors are welcome-- and prospective residents, too. There are some places for rent, others for sale. If interested, get in touch!
And, please follow the Blog and comment whenever you like!

William Blake's Birthday

November 28 will be the anniversary of William Blake's presence (in one form or another) on this earth.
Whatta Guy. I urge everyone who can to get acquainted with William Blake's incredibly gorgeous and strange (to some) poems and artwork.
Quarry Hill has been known to celebrate William Blake's birthday in some amusing and interesting ways. For instance, one year we had a William Blake Quiz Show-- Jim Drougas and myself against Irving and Allen. Jim and I beat them easily-- we knew more quotes than they did (I've always been good at quotes, if I do say so myself!). Later Irving was eating crackers in the kitchen--something he did pretty much when he felt defeated. I feel rather badly now about our triumph.
But I feel good about William Blake. A unique being of sublime beauty. I've always felt connected to him because (well one reason) he died on my birthday-to-be, August 12, 1827.
This post is dedicated to Jim Drougas, the grand boo hoo of Blakeianism. Visit the Unknown, Obscure Little Book Shop (now the Unoppressive Non-Imperialist Bargain Bookstore)The Unoppressive Non-Imperialist Bargain Bookshop on Carmine St. in New York City to learn more about William Blake's life and amazing death!

  2. Ah William Blake, like a sunflower
Holds us in the golden hour
    Of our own eternal light
And nothing else e'er shone so bright.
