Don Calhoun's Birthday

June 14, 2011-- Remembering Don Calhoun, Ph.D, Barbara Fiske's second husband, and one of the guiding lights of Quarry Hill in the Eighties and Nineties. Don was born this day in 1917; a pacifist, Quaker elder, orange farmer, sociology professor, and much more, Don was a person we will long remember. He and Barbara had a very happy marriage. We were all very fond of him, including Irving; the three of them had a kind of mutual fondness for one another (after Irving got over his jealousy of Don). Om Mani Padme Hum. Donald W. Hi all!

I'm back! Haven't been posting as I have been pretty busy with other stuff, but I'm glad to see our faihful visitors still check up on us. I plan to keep posting as much as I can to keep people informed about our doings. Barb will be having a melanoma operation on June 10 in Hanover, NH at Dartmouth Hitchcck Med CT. It's a great hospital and she only has the cancer on the surface of her skin, but I am sure she'd love to hear from any one who feels like writing. (It has to be snail mail, I"m afraid). Write to Barbara FIske Calhoun (a great artist and a visionary community creator) at 606 Fiske RD # 1 Rochester VT 05767. She would love to hear from you, even a post card. People she doesn't know are just as welcome to send cards as people whom she does. If you feel like doing it. Photos are especially enjoyed as she likes to see what people look like. She is 91, soon to be 92 years old, and determined to hang on to life to the last 2nd!

Dear Everyone,
Barbara had a melanoma removed from her arm last week. We had hoped it was only a subaceous subhorrea (benign) but it was dark, so I was pretty sure it was melanoma. I should have gotten her to the dermatologist sooner... but the weather up here is terrifying to her.
Anyway, they think that it has not gone beyond the epidermis, or not very far, so we can surely hope she will be ok. I appreciate anyone who feels up to calling or writing her and can give you the info to do so, if you want.
She will be ok, I imagine. Holding her in the Light, as Quakers say.

My name is Alexa Dickman, and I am a comic book fan who has come across Barbara's name several times in some "Golden Age" histories.  I am currently spearheading a Women in Comics wiki and would love the chance to interview Barbara about her own career (her page:http://womenincomics.wikia.com/wiki/Barbara_Hall) and other women  I live in Boston, so it would not be too difficult for me to come up there, if she remembers that era at all and would not mind a few questions. Alternatively, I could just send you some questions to ask her, but since you are so open to visitors, I would hate to miss the opportunity!  Please let me know if this is at all feasible.
